80 Sqn goes flying!

It has been an exciting weekend for the chosen few picked for the Powered Flights at RAF Woodvale. The cadets all arrived bright and early at around 7 am, once Sergeant (ATC) Dawson had arrived we were set to get on the coach and make our way to Woodvale. On the journey we had many tired cadets snoozing on the coach, while others were chatting away and eating from their packed lunches. The weather on the 9/07/2011 was up for speculation, as it had not been raining. Though thick, low cloud was quite evident and was a cause for concern.

On arrival at RAF Woodvale, the cadets from Bolton, Bury, and Heywood Squadron were matched to 10 AEF (Air Experience Flight). In which we were sat down and given a safety briefing on the aircraft (a Grob tutor) and instructions on how to use a parachute and LSJ (Lifesaving Jacket). Everybody listened intently to the briefing, from the first time flyers, too the seasoned cadets off the back of 5 or 6 flights previous. All flyers were then to test their knowledge from the briefing and try to strap themselves into mock grob seats and mock parachutes to ensure they knew what to do.

The flights were then due to start, at around 10-11am. This was not the case unfortunately, as test flights in the weather conditions concluded it was not safe for cadets to fly. This was due to the much speculated low cloud, due to this we were delayed till later in the day to see if the weather would improve. 80 sqn cadets kept themselves occupied by turning on the movie Top Gun, some played football, others polishing their parade shoes and some did more chatting!

Later in the day, around 2-3 pm the sky appeared to be clearing up from the west, and flights were finally declared safe and were quickly taking up cadets on their first flights - all first time flyers out of the 80 sqn cadets had a chance to fly for 30 minutes and felt they had an exceptional day regardless of delays, while a select few of the cadets did not fly due to time constraints nobody left RAF Woodvale disappointed or without a smile on their face. All in all this was one of many brilliant and eventful days out we have regularly at 80 sqn and hopefully you will be their on the next one with us!

Visit from the Lord Lieutenant and Mayor of Bolton

On the 9th March, 80 (Bolton) Squadron welcomed three V.I.P guests in the Lord Lieutenant, Mayor and Mayoress of Bolton. With a large turnout of over 40 cadets on the night, we ensured their welcome was a plentiful. Every cadet has done their Squadron proud, uniforms all-round the squadron was immaculate, the Drill team was flawless and the Band's countless hours of practice paid off with an extraordinary display of musical proficiency in front of our guests.

The night began with an inspection by the Lord Lieutenant and Mayor of Bolton, the cadets who were asked questions during inspection really did impress and definitely gave a pleasing account of what we do as members of the Air Training Corps. After the inspection, our Drill team and Band pulled off some of the best performances we've seen with a brilliant show of skill and expertise. The Lord Lieutenant, Mayor and Mayoress of Bolton were very happy with what they'd seen so far, with only half the night gone.

With the second half of the night, as it was Pancake Day the Squadron invited our guests to eat some rather unconventional pancakes. A rainy night in Bolton didn't deter us though, the Pancake competition commenced, with outdoor cooking on some questionable non-stick pans - we cooked some less than fine pancakes and dashed in the rain to deliver them to our guests. Though some pancakes went missing, due to a hungry (greedy) Corporal related incident - our guests ..with regret, tasted our pancakes - very brave! Though our cooking wasn't of the highest quality we showed the Lord Lieutenant and Mayor of Bolton how to have a good time on a rainy pancake day and they certainly enjoyed themselves, along with our cadets.

On the final parade, the Squadron was award with the Lord Lieutenants hearty thanks along with a plaque and a cheque. The Mayor and Mayoress echoed the feelings of the Lord Lieutenant and expressed their pleasure and thanks before leaving. Overall we did all have done the ATC, the Squadron and yourselves proud - very well done to all who were involved in the night!
